MAINTENANCE TIMELINE

 

•  1999: Transmission and axles completely overhauled, dual shocks added to rear axle.

 

•  August 2007: New front brake rotors, fuel injectors, water pump, radiator, fresh water tank, plumbing and accessory drive belts.

 

•  October 2007: Frame-off restoration and new paint job.

 

•   2014: Engine overhauled, four new Continental MPT 81 365/80 R20 tires.

CONSTRUCTION 

The cabin is completely designed and built with GFK-

sandwiched fiberglass material.

Due to the frameless design there are no cold bridges.

The cabin is mounted on one auxiliary frame (U profile)

and 3 crossbeams (system seesaw=standard Unimog)

flexible to the Unimog chassis (three point suspension).

Therefore no cabin distortion from the chassis is possible.

The cabin is isolated with high value PE (Polyethylene)

instead of PU (Polyurethane).  3 mounts secure

the removable camper box from frame.

BACKGROUND

  

 

The Unimog is based on a 1974 model 416 that was converted into a single cab Expedition camper in Germany. We purchased it in Canada after a German couple that used it to tour, beginning in Germany, and on to South Africa, South America, and Alaska, over a period ofnine years. This truck was used, and lived in, every day for 9 years across half of the world. This is a genuine off-road expedition vehicle, built and tested in the toughest terrains. It has been in the deserts of Africa, the Amazon, the salt flats of Bolivia, the tundra of the Arctic Circle and everywhere in between.

We didn’t hesitate at the chance to purchase this vehicle for many reasons, some of which you may be thinking as well. Personal safety is paramount when you want to travel in harsh climates and unstable politics. With this Unimog you can sleep soundly at night, knowing that the camper is secure, all windows are above eye level, and there is access to the drivers’ cabin in case of an emergency. The cabin itself makes excellent use of a small space, the bed is the dining room, the entrance is also the shower. There is even enough headroom for tall people to stand without grazing the ceiling!

 

 

When it comes time to ship the Unimog over land or sea, you can also feel safe knowing that the camper can be completely sealed from the outside; there are metal panels that cover every window. All access to storage from the outside can be locked from inside the cabin with steel rods. This means during shipping the only access the shipper has is to the Cab, they cannot access, see, or touch anything in the camper or storage areas!

 

Behind the wheel, the Unimog may lack the creature comforts of a modern RV but it makes up for it in mobility and reliability. With the portal axles, locking diffs and 8 speed transmission, there is little that will stand in your way. During their 9-year trek, the previous owners experienced only a few technical issues, one being a broken coil spring (from trying to keep up with their military escort crossing the desert in Africa) and a clogged radiator. No flat tires, no blowouts, no engine failure. Maintenance is key to keeping a Unimog alive, the previous owners were meticulous with that. The oil was changed every 5000km, the differential and final drives got fresh fluid every 10000km.

How is the paint? 

The paint and bodywork were done in Mexico during the previous owner’s trip. They are not show quality! The roof was replaced due to rust, and at the same time more headroom was added. The paint is pretty utilitarian; it’s not a show queen, but it is basically there to protect from rust. 

What about Title/Registration? 

We have the original Title from Germany, all import duties and taxes have been paid. The truck is currently registered with a Ca. “Golden Rod” status. 

Does everything work? 

We always keep the batteries charged, and make a point of running the water, heater, solar panel, fridge and electrics whenever we can. It also gets started and driven. 

What needs to be done to make it drivable? 

Currently drives great. Slight attention to (these cosmetic observations, by no means a mechanical guarantee!):

Rotors, 4 corners moderate
